black silt in water
I just replaced my multipure under sink unit's model CBTVOC filter and there has been fine black silt in our water ever since--four days ago now. It tastes and smells fine and mostly filters out with a cloth, but we are concerned and wonder if this will quit, or should we replace the filter again? Thanks. Eloise Bradham
CBTVOC filter problem
Hi Eloise,
Thanks for reading our blog and letting us know how you're doing. Unfortunately, Multi-Pure does not sell the filter model CBTVOC you're talking about. That sounds like a filter that is sold by "Best Filters". Do you remember which company you bought it from? Best Filters has a different warranty plan from Multi-Pure's and they're the ones who service their own filters.
That being said.....I think I MIGHT know what happened. The black silt you're seeing is probably the carbon dust from the filter. Multi-Pure recommends to our customers that they run water through a new filter for 20 minutes, turning it upside down after about 10 minutes. That procedure allows the carbon dust to run off before you start actually using the filter and drinking water.
Did you forget to run your filter for 20 minutes when you first replaced the cartridge? If you forgot, don't worry...that black silt should eventually go away after the cartridge has been saturated. You can always take the filter out and flush water through it now until the water runs clear.
Even if you accidentally drink water with carbon in it, it won't hurt you. Our bodies are carbon-based! It just looks "icky" to see it! If I were you, I would simply take the filter out of the housing and run water through the cartridge for 10 minutes, flip it upside down to run for another 10 minutes, and then put it back into the housing. After that, You should be fine!
